Stick drift is one of the most common faults affecting the PlayStation 5 DualSense controller. A character may move without any input, aim may creep across the screen, or a game may need an increasingly large dead zone to remain playable. The correct repair depends on what has worn and on the type of replacement fitted.
What causes PS5 controller stick drift?
The original analogue sticks use potentiometers. A small contact moves across a resistive track as the stick is operated. Wear, contamination or loss of accurate centring can make the controller report movement when the stick is physically at rest. Cleaning may help when dirt is the cause, but it cannot rebuild a worn resistive track.
Can calibration or a software update fix it?
Calibration can correct a centre point after suitable parts have been fitted, but it cannot repair mechanical wear. Likewise, a firmware update is worth checking before arranging a repair, but persistent movement visible in a controller tester usually indicates a hardware issue.

A good standard replacement restores the original contact-based design. It can be economical, but it remains subject to mechanical wear.
Hall Effect sticks
Hall Effect modules use magnetic sensing rather than a resistive track. This removes that particular wear point, although module quality, installation and calibration still matter.

Replacing a stick requires controlled desoldering and soldering on a multilayer controller board. Excessive heat or force can damage pads and through-hole connections. Repair or replace the controller?
If drift is the only fault and the shell, USB-C socket, triggers and battery are otherwise sound, repair normally makes good sense. A controller with several unrelated faults may need an individual assessment before work begins.

Will TMR sticks make drift impossible?
No electronic or mechanical assembly is immune from every future fault. TMR removes the worn resistive-track mechanism responsible for many drift failures, but the controller still contains other components that can fail.
Can a previously repaired controller be assessed?
Usually, yes. Previous pad damage or poor modification work can make the repair more involved, so any additional work is discussed before proceeding.
Does the whole controller need posting?

How do you know the new sticks are actually calibrated properly?
Centre position is only one part of the test. A repaired DualSense should also reach the expected range in every direction, return consistently to neutral and produce a reasonably even circularity plot. Those checks apply to standard replacement modules as well as Hall-effect and TMR upgrades.
