PS5 DualSense Stick Calibration and Circularity – What Good Repair Testing Looks Like

Replacing analogue sticks in a PS5 DualSense is only half of a good drift repair. The new modules also need to be checked for centre position, full travel and consistent circularity so that the controller behaves properly across the complete range of movement.

What does stick calibration actually mean?

Calibration is the process of making sure the electrical output of the new analogue module matches the physical position of the stick. At rest, the reported position should sit close to centre. At full movement, the stick should reach the expected outer range in every direction without obvious clipping or dead areas.

Why calibration cannot fix a worn stick

Software or electronic calibration can compensate for a small centre offset after suitable hardware has been installed, but it cannot rebuild a worn resistive track, repair a damaged sensor or correct loose mechanical parts. If a controller drifts because the original module is physically worn, the hardware fault still needs repairing.

What is circularity?

Controller test tools can plot the path produced when the stick is moved around its full outer edge. The result is often shown with a circularity or error percentage. It is a useful measurement because it shows whether the stick reaches a reasonably even range around the full 360 degrees.

A single circularity number should not be treated as the only pass-or-fail test. Good centre position, smooth response, full directional travel and repeatability matter as well.

What should be checked after a stick replacement?

  • Centre: both sticks should settle consistently near the neutral point
  • Range: full left, right, up, down and diagonal travel should register correctly
  • Circularity: the outer path should be even rather than badly clipped or distorted
  • Return to centre: the stick should not hang away from neutral after release
  • Buttons: L3/R3 clicks and surrounding controls should still operate normally
  • Controller function: triggers, buttons, wireless operation and charging should be checked before return

Do standard, Hall-effect and TMR sticks all need calibration?

Yes. The sensing technology changes, but installation tolerances still exist. A conventional potentiometer module, a Ginfull Hall-effect module and a GuliKit TMR module can all need centre and range adjustment after soldering. Magnetic sensing removes the resistive contact-track wear mechanism, but it does not remove the need for good installation and testing.

Why soldering quality matters before calibration

An electronically perfect calibration cannot compensate for lifted pads, damaged plated through-holes, weak joints or excessive heat damage. The module first needs to be fitted correctly on the multilayer controller board; calibration is the finishing stage, not a substitute for sound soldering.

What does a good repair feel like in-game?

The controller should centre predictably, respond smoothly to small inputs and reach the expected full range without requiring an oversized software dead zone just to hide drift. The test screen is useful evidence, but the final goal is normal, repeatable controller behaviour rather than chasing an impressive-looking number in isolation.
