PS5 Overheating: Dust, Airflow, Fan Problems and Liquid Metal
Share
A loud fan or an unexpected shutdown does not, on its own, identify a PS5 liquid-metal problem. Dust restriction, room ventilation, a fan fault and faults outside the cooling system can produce overlapping symptoms. Start with observations rather than assuming one repair fits every console.
Check airflow before dismantling anything
Switch the console off, disconnect it and allow it to cool before inspecting it. Keep the vents unobstructed and use the console in an open, well-ventilated position rather than a tightly enclosed cabinet. Follow Sony's safety instructions for your model. Do not insert metal objects into vents or open the mains power-supply casing.
Record when the symptom occurs: at startup, in menus, after a particular game has been running, or under sustained load. Note whether an overheating message appears and whether the fan runs. A console that abruptly loses power without a temperature warning still needs proper diagnosis; this is not proof that its APU interface needs replacement.
Dust and excessive fan noise
Dust can accumulate around the fan, heatsink fins and internal ventilation paths. External wiping cannot reach every restricted passage. An internal clean involves model-appropriate disassembly and removing accessible contamination, followed by reassembly and operational checks.
A functioning console with dusty vents or increased fan noise may benefit from maintenance. Noise can also come from worn fan bearings, vibration or electrical coil noise; cleaning does not guarantee that every sound disappears. Nor should a service promise a temperature reduction in degrees without comparable measurements.
The cooling fan and its motherboard connector
The fan needs both a working motor and an intact electrical connection. A connector pulled from the board during disassembly is a different fault from dust build-up. Local solder pads or tracks may need repair as well as the socket. Pulling on the wires can worsen damage; stop using a console with a disconnected or non-working cooling fan.
Replacing the board connector does not replace the fan or repair every fault in the fan-driving circuitry. Extensive missing pads or damage from previous attempts must be assessed individually.
What liquid metal does in a PS5
The APU transfers heat through a liquid-metal thermal interface. Liquid metal is electrically conductive and must remain contained around the intended contact area. It is not interchangeable with an arbitrary blob of ordinary CPU thermal paste.
Servicing involves inspecting the interface, the containment barrier and the contact surfaces. Depending on condition, an appropriate repair may re-spread existing liquid metal or replace it. Disturbed or defective surrounding thermal materials also need suitable specifications. Automatically replacing liquid metal during every clean is not necessary and makes a maintenance package materially different from a thermal service.
General repair documentation describes the procedure; it is not evidence that FrameRate Builds has completed or measured a particular customer's repair. Our service scope should be read alongside the console model and the actual findings.
Original PS5, Slim and Pro are different
Read the CFI number on the console label. Original disc and digital families include CFI-10xx, CFI-11xx and CFI-12xx. Slim and Pro have different layouts and components; instructions and replacement parts should not be transferred between them solely because they look similar. The initial FRB service range is limited to original PS5 families.
Choosing the right repair scope
- Deep clean: maintenance for a functioning dusty console; no routine liquid-metal work.
- Thermal service: cleaning plus investigation and rectification of serviceable cooling-interface issues.
- Fan connector repair: physical connector damage and limited serviceable local board damage.
- Other faults: unexplained no power, extensive motherboard damage and unrelated circuitry are outside these fixed scopes.
Frequently asked questions
Does every shutdown mean overheating?
No. Power and motherboard faults can cause shutdowns too. A symptom alone does not establish the cause.
Is a full clean the same as liquid-metal replacement?
No. They have different scopes. An internal clean does not routinely disturb the APU interface.
Can I keep testing a console with a broken fan connection?
Do not repeatedly run it without cooling. Disconnect it and have the damaged connection assessed.
