How to Test Your Nextbase Dash Cam Battery at Home

By Anthony O’Brien — owner and repair technician at FrameRate Builds, an independent UK mail-in electronics repair business. Published 26 October 2026.

If your Nextbase only works with its lead connected, a controlled check can help establish whether the internal battery needs attention. It is not a test of whether the camera can record an entire journey without power. The battery-equipped Nextbase models covered by our services use a small reserve for brief operation and controlled shutdown; normal driving recording should use the correct external supply.

When I assess a battery enquiry, I am interested in what happens at the point external power is removed, whether shutdown is orderly, and whether the result can be repeated under the same conditions. The battery icon alone does not answer those questions.

The hero is an illustration. Its battery symbol and stopwatch do not represent a measured result or a Nextbase menu.

First, understand normal shutdown versus battery failure

A dash cam may finish its current recording and switch itself off soon after the ignition is turned off. That can be exactly what it is intended to do. A screen going dark can also be a screensaver while recording continues. Neither observation, on its own, proves that the battery is worn out.

Look for the difference between a deliberate shutdown and an abrupt loss of power, particularly where settings are repeatedly lost or the camera cannot perform its normal shutdown. If it repeatedly reboots while external power remains connected, start with the restarting and startup-loop guide before interpreting it as a runtime problem.

Before you start

  • Confirm the exact Nextbase model. This guide is for battery-equipped cameras, not a universal procedure for every Nextbase range or separate battery accessory.
  • Read its manufacturer battery-test and charging instructions. Controls, charging indicators and expected behaviour vary.
  • Have a known-good suitable power source, the correct compatible cable, and a clock or phone timer.
  • Preserve any important footage. Removing a card is different from formatting it: formatting erases recordings.
  • Carry out the check indoors at ordinary room temperature on a clear surface, with the camera attended.

Do not test or charge a camera with a swollen battery, separating case, unusual heat, smell or damage. Do not squeeze the housing closed, puncture the cell or open the unit for this check. Contact me about assessment and safe transport instead.

A controlled battery check

The sequence below reflects Nextbase’s published battery-test approach for models such as the 522GW. Check the model’s own instructions before using it on a different camera.

  1. Prepare the camera. With power off, remove the microSD card and disconnect any optional rear camera. Keep them safe. This removes recording and accessory differences from the comparison.
  2. Reset and check the settings as directed. Use the identified reset control and procedure in the manual. Turn parking mode and screensaver off for the test where Nextbase specifies this. Note any auto-power-off setting and follow the model’s test instructions so that a timer is not mistaken for battery exhaustion.
  3. Give it a proper charge. Use the suitable supply and correct lead. Nextbase’s published 522GW test specifies around two to three hours charging with the camera switched off and the rear camera disconnected. Follow the charging method for your model; do not assume every flashing light means it is fully charged.
  4. Disconnect external power and carry out the prescribed test. If the camera has shut down, switch it on as its instructions direct. Start your timer and note what happens: a stable screen, a planned shutdown, an immediate power loss or repeated restarting. Do not mistake a “no SD card” message for a failed test.
  5. Record the result and recharge afterwards. Write down the actual behaviour, settings and elapsed time. This is a no-card battery check, not a recording test. There is no benefit in repeatedly running the battery flat.

How long should the battery last?

Think of it as a short reserve, not a phone or action-camera battery. A replacement is not intended to give hours of unplugged recording or all-day parking coverage. The important repair outcome is appropriate short-duration operation and reliable shutdown for that model.

I do not apply one universal number of minutes to every Nextbase. Test conditions, model, settings, temperature and attached accessories affect the result, and manufacturer figures refer to particular conditions. Use your model’s specified battery-test criteria if you need a numerical comparison; a quoted figure for another model is not a pass mark for yours.

Equally, do not diagnose failure just because it turns off shortly after unplugging during normal recording. Check whether it is deliberately completing its shutdown. Tell me what it actually does rather than trying to make it run for as long as possible.

What your result can tell us

Result Useful interpretation
It works on a verified supply, but loses power immediately during the prescribed battery test after charging The battery or its charging path needs assessment; the result supports investigation, not a guaranteed parts diagnosis.
It completes an orderly shutdown after power is removed This may be normal. Check the model’s settings and test method before calling it a failure.
The display goes dark but status indicators or recording continue Check screensaver behaviour. A dark screen is not the same as a camera losing power.
It resets or freezes with the supply still connected Work through power, card and startup troubleshooting; this test alone cannot identify the cause.
It behaves indoors but not through the vehicle adaptor or hardwire kit Investigate the vehicle-side supply and connections before assuming the camera battery is the only issue.

After the battery check, confirm normal recording separately

Switch off, refit a compatible known-good card and restore the settings you need. Reconnect the correct external supply and, if used, the rear camera. Check startup, recording and saved-file playback, then observe a normal shutdown when power is removed. A camera staying on without a card does not establish that it records reliably.

If the fault returns only with the original card or rear camera connected, include that in your message. Changing several things together makes it much harder to identify which one mattered.

Why I test more than the battery icon

In my Nextbase repair work, a successful parts replacement is followed by charging, startup, recording and shutdown checks. I have also encountered 522GW cameras with separate display or sensor-related problems, so I do not treat a new battery as proof that every fault has been resolved.

For a 522GW that flickers, turns white or freezes while continuously powered, use the dedicated screen and freezing guide. For a broader symptom checklist, see signs of a failing Nextbase battery. Those pages address different questions from this controlled test.

Send me the observations, not just “battery failed”

A useful enquiry might say: “522GW, charged using the model’s test instructions, card and rear camera removed, parking mode and screensaver off. It is stable on the lead but loses power immediately when I carry out the unplugged test.” Include your actual result and any different behaviour in the vehicle. That gives me more to work with than the charge symbol alone.

Quick questions

Does a new battery mean I can stop using the power cable?

No. Use the proper external supply for normal driving recording. The internal battery is a brief reserve, not a substitute for the vehicle adaptor.

Can a home test prove it only needs a battery?

No. It helps separate symptoms, but charging-path and other internal faults may need workshop checks.

Should I use a multimeter or open the camera?

Neither is needed for this user-level check. Battery voltage alone does not establish usable capacity or prove that charging works correctly.
