Switchless Region-Free Mega Drive Upgrade – Europe, USA, Japan and 50/60Hz
Share
A switchless region upgrade allows a compatible PAL SEGA Mega Drive to change region and refresh rate using its original controls. It avoids drilling the case or adding obvious toggle switches, preserving the exterior appearance.
What can be selected?
The upgrade provides Europe, USA and Japan modes together with 50Hz and 60Hz operation. A multi-colour indicator shows the selected mode. The exact button sequence is explained when the console is returned.
Why run games at 60Hz?
Many games were designed around 60Hz operation. PAL versions may run more slowly or display borders at 50Hz, although behaviour varies by title. Region selection can also help with software that checks whether the console is set to Europe, USA or Japan.
Does it make every cartridge fit?
No. Electronic region compatibility and physical cartridge shape are separate issues. Some imported cartridges may not fit the slot or shell without physical accommodation. No case modification is included unless specifically agreed.
Display and cable compatibility
The television, monitor or scaler must accept the selected 60Hz signal, and the correct video cable is essential. RGB is generally the preferred connection for an upgraded Mega Drive.
Model 1 and Model 2 compatibility
The service is intended for compatible UK or European PAL consoles. Board revisions vary, particularly within Model 2 hardware, so compatibility is confirmed during inspection.
