SEGA Mega-CD Capacitor Leakage and Preservation Guide

SEGA Mega-CD systems are valuable, mechanically complex and old enough for capacitor condition to deserve serious attention. Model 1 and Model 2 are different designs, which is why FrameRate Builds provides separate services rather than a combined generic listing.

Why capacitor leakage matters

Leaked electrolyte is electrically conductive and corrosive. It can contaminate solder joints, attack copper tracks and damage pads beneath components. Replacing the capacitor without cleaning and inspecting the affected area leaves part of the risk untreated.

Mega-CD Model 1

The front-loading Model 1 contains multiple assemblies and a more complex loading mechanism. Its value and construction make careful dismantling, board inspection and full operational testing important. View Mega-CD Model 1 repairs.

Mega-CD Model 2

What faults will a recap not repair?

A recap cannot guarantee repair of a worn laser, damaged loading mechanism, failed fuse, broken connector, corrupt or failed component, or extensive board corrosion. Existing faults should be described before ordering.

Preservation versus fault repair

Visible leakage, corrosion or unstable operation strengthens the case for intervention. Preventative recapping can also make sense for a well-kept valuable system, but it still requires careful workmanship: unnecessary pad damage is worse than leaving a verified healthy component undisturbed.

What to send

Normally, send the Mega-CD unit itself, packed securely in a rigid box. A compatible Mega Drive is not usually required unless an intermittent compatibility fault needs to be reproduced. Remove discs and accessories unless specifically requested.
