Original Joy-Con Drift: Nintendo Repair or a GuliKit TMR Upgrade?

If your original Joy-Con drifts, check Nintendo’s eligible free UK repair route before paying for an aftermarket upgrade. A GuliKit NS40T TMR replacement changes the sensing technology; it is a separate choice with its own compatibility, calibration and support considerations. This guide helps you distinguish a single-side repair, a pair upgrade and faults that replacing a stick will not solve.

What does the symptom suggest?

Symptom First check Repair consideration
One Joy-Con moves without input Test left and right separately Identify the affected side before booking
Controls fail only when attached to the console Compare attached and wireless use Rail or connection fault may be involved
Stick catches, fails to click or has damaged housing Stop forcing the mechanism Mechanical damage needs assessment

These checks narrow the fault; they do not establish a diagnosis on their own. Record other faults and previous repairs before requesting an assessment.

Check Nintendo’s repair option before paying for an upgrade

Nintendo currently offers eligible control-stick responsiveness repairs at no charge for consumers in the UK, EEA and Switzerland, including wear-related and out-of-warranty cases. Conditions and exclusions apply. Check Nintendo’s current terms first if your priority is restoring a drifting Joy-Con at the lowest cost.

A paid magnetic upgrade is a different choice: it changes the sensing technology using an aftermarket part. Opening, modifying or repairing a controller can affect eligibility for Nintendo’s service under its terms. Do not assume Nintendo will later cover a modified stick fault. FrameRate Builds is not offering an official Nintendo repair or upgrade.

Identify original Joy-Con, not Joy-Con 2

The model-specific service scope covers original rail-connected Joy-Con: HAC-015 left and HAC-016 right, including the original Joy-Con supplied with Switch OLED. Each controller contains one stick. A pair upgrade means one module in each of two separate controllers.

Joy-Con 2 uses different hardware and is excluded. Switch Lite may share the replacement stick component in supplier listings, but installing it inside a console is a different service and is also excluded here. For original Switch Pro Controller drift, full-size soldered modules are required instead.

NS40T TMR is different from NS40 Hall effect

The intended part family for this service is GuliKit NS40T TMR. The earlier NS40 Hall-effect product is a different part. Some trade listings combine the words Hall and TMR or use broad anti-drift language; that is not reliable component identification. Confirm the model and the contents before purchasing.

TMR senses position magnetically rather than using a sliding resistive contact. That avoids a common contact-wear mechanism, but does not guarantee that a spring, click switch, connector or another electronic part can never fail. Sensor technology also does not override game settings or the controller’s reporting behaviour.

The repair still needs careful handling

Original Joy-Con sticks connect by a small ribbon cable rather than the full-size soldered assembly used in the Pro Controller. Solder-free replacement is not the same as risk-free replacement. Small connector latches, cables and screws require careful handling, and left and right disassembly differ.

A cracked shell, damaged rail or charging fault should be assessed separately. Replacing the stick is not a cure for wireless disconnections or every button fault. After reassembly, confirm the stick click, other buttons, rail connection, wireless operation, charging, rumble and motion input still behave normally.

Calibration belongs on the original Switch console

After replacement, use System Settings, Controllers and Sensors, Calibrate Control Sticks and follow the console prompts for each stick. The module supplier also directs owners to console calibration. Post-repair checks should include a full shutdown and restart, then repeat the resting-centre and travel checks.

GuliKit’s browser tool lists original PS4, PS5 and Switch Pro controllers for calibration; original Joy-Con is not on that calibration list. A browser displaying input should not be confused with a supported way to save Joy-Con calibration. Check the final result on the intended console and in a game, without concealing an offset behind an unusually large dead zone.

Choose one Joy-Con or a pair based on what you need

If only one controller is affected, a single-side service can avoid unnecessary work on the other. A pair can be sensible if both drift or if you deliberately want both changed to the same sensing technology. Confirm which option you are buying: iFixit’s part-only listing contains one joystick, while other suppliers sell pairs.

Compare paid-upgrade cost plus outward postage with Nintendo’s eligible repair option and the price of suitable replacement controllers. If the shell, rail or battery also needs attention, request an assessment before selecting a stick-only service. A repair decision should be based on the whole controller and your intended use.

Choosing a mail-in upgrade

For a Original Joy-Con controller, see our GuliKit TMR mail-in upgrade service. Check the compatible model, repair scope and current turnaround before booking and posting.

Posting a controller safely

FrameRate Builds arranges tracked UK return delivery. Shipping is £4.99 for orders under £50 and free for qualifying orders of £50 or more, applied at checkout. You arrange and pay separately for postage to FrameRate Builds. See our shipping and mail-in information and 12-month repair warranty terms.

Use a sturdy box with padding on all sides, include your order details and send only the controller unless accessories are requested. A thin padded envelope does not protect sticks or triggers adequately. See how to pack electronics for a mail-in repair and how the mail-in process works.

Frequently asked questions

Is every drifting Joy-Con eligible for a free Nintendo repair?

Nintendo’s route has conditions and exclusions. Check its current UK terms and booking process. Damage, misuse and some previous opening or modification can affect eligibility; do not assume a paid aftermarket upgrade will later be covered.

Do I need to upgrade both Joy-Con?

Not necessarily. Each original Joy-Con has one stick. A single-side service addresses the selected left or right controller; a pair changes one module in each of two controllers.

Does NS40T fit Joy-Con 2?

The original Joy-Con NS40T listing does not establish Joy-Con 2 compatibility. Joy-Con 2 and Switch Lite console repairs are outside this service scope, even where a supplier groups products together.
