How to Pack Electronics Safely for a UK Mail-In Repair
Share
Good packaging protects your device from drops, crushing and movement while it travels through the postal network. This guide explains how to pack a dash cam, iPad, game controller or retro console safely before sending it to FrameRate Builds for a UK mail-in repair.
Do not use a padded envelope
A bubble-lined envelope does not provide enough protection against crushing, bending or impact. Always use a sturdy corrugated cardboard box with cushioning around every side of the device.
What you will need
- A strong cardboard box in good condition
- Several layers of bubble wrap or suitable protective foam
- Paper cushioning or other void-fill material
- Strong parcel tape
- A clearly addressed outer label
- Your order number and contact details inside the parcel
The box should be large enough for protection around the device, but not so large that the contents can move freely.
Pack your device in six steps
- Switch the device off. Disconnect it from power and allow it to cool before packing.
- Remove unnecessary accessories. Send only the main device unless the repair description or FrameRate Builds specifically asks for something else.
- Wrap the device thoroughly. Use several layers of bubble wrap or protective foam, paying particular attention to screens, sticks, triggers, sockets and projecting parts.
- Cushion the bottom and sides. Place padding in the box before the wrapped device, then fill every remaining gap.
- Perform a gentle shake test. Before sealing the box, move it carefully. Nothing inside should slide, knock or rattle.
- Seal and label securely. Tape every opening and attach the address label flat to the largest surface.
What to include inside
Place a note inside the parcel containing:
- Your full name
- Your order number
- Your return address
- A contact telephone number or email address
- A short description of the fault if it is not already clear from the order
Avoid placing loose notes, screws, memory cards or small accessories directly against the device. Put any specifically requested small item in a labelled, sealed bag.
Dash cams
- Send the main camera only unless another part has been requested.
- Remove the windscreen mount, charging lead and rear camera unless they are relevant to the fault.
- Remove the SD card or microSD card. Keep it safely at home.
- Wrap the lens area carefully without placing adhesive tape directly on it.
- Protect the screen and any projecting mount socket from pressure.
If the case is distorted, unusually hot, smells chemical or appears to contain a swollen battery, do not post it without contacting us and checking the carrier’s current battery rules.
iPads and tablets
- Back up important data before sending the device.
- Power the tablet off fully and remove detachable cases, keyboards, chargers and accessories unless requested.
- Place a clean sheet of card or thin protective foam over the front before bubble wrapping.
- For cracked glass, an existing screen protector may be left in place if it is helping to contain loose fragments.
- Never apply parcel tape directly to the screen, casing or cracked glass.
- Use a rigid box that cannot flex or fold around the tablet.
Game controllers
- Do not send charging cables or other accessories unless requested.
- Protect both analogue sticks and the shoulder triggers from direct pressure.
- Wrap the controller fully and use enough cushioning to prevent the sticks touching the sides of the box.
- Do not use a thin envelope; triggers and stick mechanisms are easily damaged by crushing.
Retro consoles and handhelds
- Send the console or handheld only unless a power supply, controller or cartridge has been requested for testing.
- Remove cartridges, memory cards, batteries and loose accessories where the design allows.
- Protect cartridge slots, sockets, switches and screen lenses from pressure.
- Do not allow cables, plugs or controllers to move loose in the same box.
- If several items have been requested, wrap each one separately before placing them together.
Choose suitable postage
Use a tracked service and retain the receipt and tracking number. Consider the compensation level offered by the carrier in relation to the value of the device. FrameRate Builds cannot control a parcel before it arrives, so secure packaging and suitable postage are the sender’s responsibility.
Devices containing lithium batteries can be subject to carrier restrictions, particularly if a battery is damaged or defective. Check the latest Royal Mail prohibited and restricted items guidance, or the rules of the carrier being used, before posting.
Common packing mistakes to avoid
- Using only a padded envelope
- Choosing a box with no room for cushioning
- Leaving empty space that lets the device move
- Sending unrequested mounts, cables, SD cards or accessories
- Allowing a controller’s sticks or triggers to press against the box
- Using an original retail box as the only outer packaging
- Forgetting to include the order number and return details
