Cracked iPad glass compared with a damaged LCD display

Cracked iPad Glass or Damaged LCD? Which Repair Do You Need?

On many standard iPad generations, the outer touch glass and the LCD image panel are separate parts. A cracked front does not automatically mean the LCD needs replacing—but ordering from appearance alone can still be risky.

What is the digitizer?

The digitizer is the touch-sensitive front glass. A digitizer repair may be suitable when the glass is cracked or touch response is unreliable but the image beneath remains clear and complete.

Signs the LCD may also be damaged

  • Black patches that look like spreading ink
  • Bright vertical or horizontal lines
  • Sections with no visible image
  • Heavy flickering or colour distortion
  • A completely blank display despite the iPad otherwise responding

Signs commonly associated with digitizer damage

  • Visible cracks with an otherwise normal picture
  • Touch failing in particular areas
  • Phantom or self-activating touches
  • Loose or sharp glass around the edge

These symptoms are guidance rather than a guaranteed remote diagnosis. Impact damage can affect connectors, the LCD, casing or logic board as well as the glass.

Check the frame before deciding

A badly bent corner or distorted chassis can prevent new glass from sitting correctly and may place stress on the replacement part. Send photographs before ordering if the casing is bent or the screen has lifted.

Quality of the replacement matters

FrameRate Builds uses quality MobileSentrix digitizers for supported standard iPads. Correct fitting, cleaning, adhesive preparation and testing matter just as much as the glass itself.

Before posting the iPad

Back up important data, switch the device off and use a rigid box with protection on every side. Read the mail-in packing guide before sending cracked glass.
