How to Identify Your iPad Model and Generation

Choosing an iPad repair by screen size or appearance alone can lead to the wrong service being ordered. Apple’s model number is the safest way to identify the exact generation before booking a battery or digitizer replacement.

Where to find the iPad model number

Turn the iPad over and look at the small print near the bottom of the rear casing. The hardware model begins with the letter A followed by four digits, such as A1822. If the text is difficult to read, use a bright light and photograph it with another device.

If the iPad still works, you can also open Settings → General → About. The item initially shown as “Model Number” may begin with M; tap it once to reveal the A-number.

Supported standard iPad generations

Regional and cellular variants can use different model numbers. Always use the exact product compatibility information rather than relying only on the year of purchase.

Standard iPad, Air, mini and Pro are different

An “iPad 9th Generation” is not the same device as an iPad Air, iPad mini or iPad Pro released around the same time. Their screens, batteries and internal construction differ. FrameRate Builds’ current generation listings cover the standard iPad models stated on each product page.

What if the rear model number is unreadable?

Do not guess. Send a clear photograph of the rear casing and, if possible, the About screen through the contact page. The correct repair can then be confirmed before the device is posted.
